Chroma Jam is a color-mixing puzzle that turns paint blending into a brain-teasing challenge. Each level shows you a target color — a specific hue, saturation and brightness — and gives you a palette of source colors plus a set of sliders. Your job is to mix the source colors and adjust the sliders until your mixed color matches the target as closely as possible. The closer the match, the higher your star rating. The fewer adjustments you make, the better your score bonus.

Basic Color Mixing
Chroma Jam uses the traditional subtractive (RYB) color model that most people learn in art class. The fundamental mixing rules are:
- Red + Yellow = Orange — a warm secondary color. More red makes a deeper orange; more yellow makes a lighter, brighter orange.
- Blue + Yellow = Green — a cool secondary. More blue deepens it toward forest green; more yellow brightens it toward lime.
- Red + Blue = Purple — a secondary that swings dramatically with proportion. More red gives magenta; more blue gives violet.
- All three primaries mixed = Brown / Gray — the more balanced the mix, the grayer; the more red-dominant, the browner.
- Adding white = Tint — lightens the color and reduces saturation.
- Adding black = Shade — darkens the color while keeping the hue.
Internalizing these six rules covers roughly 80% of Chroma Jam levels. The remaining 20% involve subtle hue shifts and opacity tricks that we'll cover below.
When the target is a secondary color (orange, green, purple), start by mixing equal parts of the two primaries, then nudge the proportion toward whichever primary the target leans toward. Equal parts is rarely the final answer, but it's the fastest starting point.
Precision Tuning Techniques
Once you have the approximate hue, the real challenge begins: matching the exact saturation and brightness of the target. Use these techniques to close the gap:
- Squint at the swatches. Squinting reduces your perception of fine detail and makes hue differences more obvious. If your mix and the target blur together when you squint, you're within a few percent of the answer.
- Compare the borders. Place your mix directly next to the target. The boundary between them reveals the difference: a bright line means you're off; a fading seam means you're close.
- Adjust one channel at a time. Don't change hue, saturation and brightness simultaneously — you won't know which adjustment helped. Tweak one, observe, then tweak the next.
- Use the "overshoot and pull back" method. If you can't tell whether your hue is too warm or too cool, push the warm slider well past the target. The direction of the improvement tells you which way to go; then pull back to fine-tune.
- Trust incremental changes. Most precision matches are achieved with 2–3% slider adjustments. Big swings rarely help once you're in the ballpark.
Your eyes fatigue after staring at a color for more than 20 seconds — the target will start to look "right" even when it isn't. Glance away at a neutral gray (or the dark page background) for two seconds between adjustments to reset your color perception.
Opacity and Brightness Sliders
Beyond the hue mixers, Chroma Jam exposes two sliders that control how your mixed color is rendered:
Opacity Slider
- Controls how transparent your mixed color is when layered over a background.
- At 100% opacity, the background doesn't affect the visible color. At lower opacities, the background bleeds through and shifts the apparent hue.
- Use opacity to lighten a color without changing its hue — a 70% opacity mix over a white background produces a tint effect similar to adding white, but with finer control.
- On levels with a colored background, opacity is the only way to achieve certain pastel targets. Lower opacity mixes the target hue with the background color, which is often exactly what's needed.
Brightness Slider
- Controls the lightness of the mixed color independent of hue.
- Raising brightness past 100% can wash out the color — useful for very pale targets, but be careful not to lose saturation.
- Lowering brightness darkens the color toward black. Most "deep" target colors (forest green, navy, maroon) require a brightness reduction after the hue is mixed.
- Brightness interacts with opacity: a low-brightness, low-opacity color over a light background can look muddy. When targeting dark colors, prefer full opacity and use brightness alone.
Hue Overshoot and How to Fix It
Hue overshoot is the most common precision problem in Chroma Jam. It happens when you've added too much of one primary, pushing the hue past the target into the next color zone. Examples:
- Orange overshoots toward red — you added too much red. Pull back the red slider by 3–5% and add a touch of yellow to compensate.
- Green overshoots toward blue — you added too much blue. Reduce blue and add yellow.
- Purple overshoots toward magenta — too much red. Reduce red, add a small amount of blue.
The fix is always the same: identify which primary caused the overshoot, reduce it slightly, and add the opposite primary to bring the hue back. The key is making small corrections — overshoot corrections of more than 5% usually cause a counter-overshoot in the other direction.
A common mistake is trying to fix overshoot with the brightness or opacity sliders. This masks the hue problem temporarily but the match will be poor. Always fix hue first, then tune brightness and opacity.
Advanced Color Tuning
On the hardest levels, the target color is a tertiary or quaternary hue — something like teal, coral, olive or amber. These require multi-step mixing strategies:
- Teal — mix blue and green first (a blue-leaning green), then add a small amount of yellow to warm it slightly. Direct blue + yellow tends to give pure green, not teal.
- Coral — start with red + white for a pink base, then add a touch of yellow to warm it toward coral. Pure red + yellow gives orange, which is too saturated.
- Olive — mix green first, then add a small amount of red to darken and dull it. Olive is essentially a desaturated, darkened green.
- Amber — start with orange, then add a small amount of brown (or red + a touch of blue) to deepen it. Amber is warmer and darker than pure orange.
For these advanced mixes, always work in this order: hue first, then saturation, then brightness, then opacity. Changing the order wastes slider moves and often confuses the eye.
When a target color looks "muddy" or grayish, it's almost always a tertiary mix with all three primaries present. Don't try to brighten it by adding more of a single primary — instead, identify the dominant hue and accept that the target is intentionally desaturated. Match the mud, don't fight it.
Common Mistakes
- Adding white when you should reduce opacity. White changes the hue; opacity doesn't. For pale tints over a light background, prefer opacity reduction.
- Adjusting multiple sliders at once. You lose track of which change helped. One slider at a time, always.
- Trusting fatigued eyes. After 20 seconds of staring, your perception shifts. Glance away between adjustments.
- Forgetting that the background matters. On levels with colored backgrounds, opacity changes the visible color. Always consider the background when planning your mix.
- Trying to fix hue with brightness. If the hue is wrong, no amount of brightness adjustment will save the match. Fix hue first.
- Overcorrecting overshoots. Big corrections cause counter-overshoots. Use 2–3% slider moves when you're close to the target.
- Ignoring saturation. Two colors can have the same hue and brightness but different saturation. If your mix looks "right" but the match score is low, saturation is usually the culprit.
Chroma Jam rewards a careful eye and a methodical approach. Once you internalize the primary mixing rules, learn to reset your color perception between adjustments, and follow the hue-saturation-brightness-opacity order, even the trickiest tertiary targets become approachable. Your three-star rate will climb steadily as your eye for color sharpens — and that skill transfers directly to real-world design and art.
